Diagnosing Elliptical Noises

Squeak, Grind, Click: What That Elliptical Noise is Telling You

An elliptical is supposed to provide a smooth, quiet workout. When strange noises appear, it's your machine's way of telling you something is wrong. Here’s how to decode those sounds.

Unusual noises are a sign that your elliptical needs attention.

A noisy elliptical is one of the most common issues we encounter on service calls across New York. While it's tempting to just turn up your music, ignoring these sounds can lead to more significant damage and costly repairs. Different noises point to different problems, and knowing what to listen for can help you decide if it's a simple fix or time to call in a professional.

The Annoying Squeak

A high-pitched squeak is usually the least serious of the noises, but it can be the most irritating. It typically means one of two things:

  • Dry Joints: The many pivot points on the handlebars and foot pedals need lubrication to move freely. If they dry out, you'll get a plastic-on-metal or metal-on-metal squeak.
  • Unlevel Machine: If your elliptical isn't perfectly level on the floor, the frame can flex as you use it, causing the plastic covers to rub together and squeak.

DIY Fix: First, check if your machine is level and adjust the feet if necessary. If the squeak persists, you can try applying a small amount of lithium grease to the pivot points.

The Worrying Grind or Rumble

A deep, rhythmic grinding or rumbling sound is a more serious red flag. This noise almost always indicates a failing bearing. Bearings are what allow the flywheel and crank arms to rotate smoothly. When they wear out, they create a rough, grinding sensation that you can often feel through the pedals.

Grinding noises often originate from worn-out bearings inside the crank assembly.

This is not a DIY fix. Replacing bearings requires specialized tools to press the old ones out and install the new ones correctly. Continuing to use an elliptical with a bad bearing can damage the housing, turning a standard repair into a much more expensive one.

The Rhythmic Click or Clunk

A consistent clicking or clunking sound that happens at the same point in every rotation often points to a loose component. Here’s what to check:

  • Pedal & Crank Arms: The most common cause. Safely (and with the machine off) try to wiggle the crank arms that the pedals are attached to. If there's any play or looseness, the bolt needs to be tightened. If it's been loose for a while, the arm itself may be stripped and need replacement.
  • Internal Components: A clicking sound from inside the main housing could be a sign of a problem with the drive belt or an internal component hitting the plastic casing.

When to Stop and Call a Professional

If you hear a loud grinding, feel a clunking in the pedals, or if a simple lubrication doesn't solve a squeak, it's time to stop using the machine and call for service. Continuing to work out on a compromised machine can lead to further damage and potential injury.
